Tacoma is a port city south of Seattle. The Seattle-Tacoma or SeaTac area is inextricably linked in economy, culture and geography. The city was initially settled in 1852 when Swede Nicolas Delin built a sawmill here. It was further expanded and named Tacoma after the local name for the mountain.
The city has grown and developed hugely since 1990 when investment came pouring in. The University of Washington built a facility here, as did the Washington State History Museum and the Museum of Glass. A light rail system arrived in 2003, making commuting easier and bringing more residents and businesses to town.
Local highlights include the Washington State History Museum, Museum of Glass, Tacoma Art Museum, Point Defiance Park, Commencement Bay and Jefferson Park.
