Denver Tech Center, or “DTC” to us locals is an area located south east of Denver city center. The DTC began as a planned industrial area designed specifically to attract tech start-ups and up and coming tech-oriented companies. From its establishment in the 1970s, it has been a major employer in the area and still plays an important part in the Denver economy.
Denver Tech Center is a self-contained mini city of its own around 30 minutes’ drive from Denver. It has everything you need to survive the working week and is still within reach of the city for when you need something more. There are shopping malls, retail outlets, bars, restaurants and all the supporting businesses to provide everything this little ecosystem needs. It’s one of the reasons DTC works so well.
The center itself was dreamed up by architect and town planner Carl A. Worthington on the back of the success of Colorado’s energy boom. That plan included a 40 acre business center with fiber optic connections and the potential to spread over a further 800 acres. The success of the Denver Tech Center has seen that grow to over 850 acres of land and over 25 million square feet of building space.
The area that is DTC is mainly big businesses with a few hotels and commercial properties thrown in. The surrounding area grew up with DTC, including Park Meadows and Southwest Plaza. Both are only a short drive from the center and support the people who work there.
Because of the number of employees working within the Denver Tech Center, there are a range of bars and restaurants within the area to serve them. It’s still much a tradition around here to have a beer or two after work while watching a game or to swap war stories. Go to any bar within DTC just after 5 o’clock and be prepared to wait for service!
Some of the companies who call DTC home include:
Residential neighborhoods surround the area, the I-25 cuts right through the edge and Cherry Creek Park and reservoir border the other. Jobs, especially tech jobs attract a certain demographic that demands high quality homes and amenities. Fortunately, that support network soon sprang up after DTC was established and there are some very nice neighborhoods indeed around it.
